The Story of Nyai Loro Kidul - An Indonesian Urban Legend Story

Indonesian urban legends include the mythology surrounding Nyai Loro Kidul, an Indonesian goddess or Queen of the Southern Sea, stems from her close connection to the town of Pelabuhan Ratu. The myth of the Queen of Java's Southern Seas is believed to have originated from older prehistoric animistic beliefs in the pre-Hindu-Buddhist female deity of the Southern Ocean. On April 6th, locals in Pelabuhan Ratu celebrate her honour in the form of an annual holiday whereby the local fishermen believe that offerings and sacrifices will please the Queen and bring them good catches in fisheries and better weather throughout the year.
